The municipality of Kyustendil is about to regulate the use of individual electric vehicles, a reporter told “Focus”. The rules will be added to the currently valid regulation on the organization and safety of road traffic. According to the new rules, children under the age of 14 are not allowed to drive electric scooters, and those under the age of 18 must wear a helmet. Those between the ages of 14 and 16 may only operate vehicles on bicycle infrastructure.

Drivers of individual electric vehicles are obliged to comply with the Road Traffic Act. Persons over the age of 16 can drive electric vehicles on the bicycle infrastructure and on the roads and street network, on which the maximum permitted speed is up to 50 km/h. A maximum speed of 25 km/h is also introduced.

With the new changes in the regulation, requirements are also added to this type of vehicle. They must have: working brakes; mechanical or electronic bell; a device for emitting white or yellow clearly distinguishable light from the front; rear red light emitting device.

During the dark part of the day or when visibility is reduced, the driver must use reflective elements on the visible part of the clothing. He undertakes to move along the established bicycle infrastructure, and in the absence of such infrastructure, closest to the right border of the traffic lane. Carriage of other persons is also prohibited.

It is prohibited to use scooters on roads where the permitted maximum speed is over 50 km/h; bus lanes; streets with a ban on bicycles; pedestrian areas; children’s playgrounds.

With the additions to the document, the fines for violators of the rules are also regulated. BGN 10 is the penalty if the individual electric vehicle does not have lighting or the driver under the age of 18 is not wearing a helmet. BGN 50 will be the penalty if the brake system is not working or if the driver does not have reflective elements or drives irregularly.
