The municipal council will discuss today the proposal of the mayor of the “Central” district, Georgi Stamenov, to make “Hristo G. Danov” street a pedestrian zone in the section between “Betoven” street and “Ruski” boulevard.

The idea was born during the reconstruction of the City Garden, also known as Dondukova, with the motive that it is a global practice to give priority to pedestrian zones, and there are already good practices in Plovdiv.

However, the proposal is unlikely to receive the approval of the city parliament. According to Maritsa’s survey of municipal councilors, the sentiments are different. In principle, they welcome the expansion of pedestrian zones in Plovdiv, but most are cautious lest additional traffic problems be created. Nikolay Gyurov, head of the PP-DB group, expressed his personal opinion, considering Stamenov’s idea to be very good. Atanas Uzunov, chairman of the local parliament from GERB, shared that he was divided, and pointed out that EVN, in a targeted letter, stated that they wanted parking spaces reserved for them on the street. Georgi Tityukov from “United for Plovdiv” and Borislav Inchev from “Bravo, Plovdiv” believe that it is a good idea to agree with experts and ask citizens.

The BSP group responded with a statement warning that the closure of the section would create traffic jams and chaos. “In the General Development Plan and in the accompanying General Plan for the organization of traffic in Plovdiv, it is not envisaged that “Hristo G. Danov” will be a pedestrian street”, emphasizes arch. Kostadin Palazov.

Citizens who work and live on “Hristo G. Danov” street and the neighboring streets “Saglasie”, “Alexander Exarch”, “Nikola Genadiev”, “Tsanko Tserkovski”, “Antim I”, Kapitan Burago share the same opinion “, “Cyril and Methodius”.

In addition to the signatures sent to “Maritsa”, they also provided the minutes of the meeting in the town hall of the “Central” district, stating that they are against a pedestrian zone. Their arguments are that “Betoven” Street is very narrow and cannot take all the traffic from the neighborhood to “Sixth of September” Blvd. , will transfer to their streets.
