“The Ugly Duckling” will come to life on the stage of the Vidin Puppet Theater. Nikola Stoyanov will present his original reading of the favorite fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen. This is the directorial debut in the puppet theater of the popular film and theater actor.

“We will surprise the Vidin audience with our different ugly duckling. A very cute show is slowly starting to happen, so we are excited. We hope to excite the audience as well. This is a very popular fairy tale, told many times and most of the times the duckling is cowardly, timid. Ours is not like that… We live in a very interesting time in which the surrounding world crushes you a lot, like a fairy tale, maybe that’s why we chose it together with the director of the Puppet Theater, mbut it crushes you and in general the question is whether you will resist and whether you will stay true to yourself and what is your inner strength…”

Young actor Martin Varbanov shared his excitement about his debut on the Vidin Puppet Theater stage:

“It’s more of a challenge for me because it’s been very difficult to bring out more of yourself because the ugly duckling and I are quite similar in that there’s a naivety, a curiosity. But it’s very difficult to enhance that trait when it must be deliberate, and when, though deliberate, every time it is as if it had never happened before.”

“The Ugly Duckling” is another challenge for actress Nadelina Kambitova:

“Once again I challenge myself with the most text, the most puppets, the most movement. I just don’t know what can happen to me on the stage of the Vidin Puppet Theater. It’s one thing to be an image, it’s another to you are two images, but to be the whole world in the puppet theater… Guys, this is really the hardest thing – all that moves is me…”

The music in the performance is by Nikola Stoyanov. The scenography and puppets were created by Julia and Zheni Lachevi, who go beyond the traditional framework and will intrigue the audience from the very first minutes of the performance.

The premiere is on April 29, Monday, at 6:00 p.m. in the salon of the Vidin State Puppet Theater.
