The declaration proposed by the councilors of “Vazrazhdane” to preserve the prestige of the institution with a call for the resignation of the speaker of the local parliament Iveta Lazarova from the group “Citizens’ Alternative-VMRO” became the reason for three hours of debate already at the beginning of today’s session of the municipal council in Stara Zagora.

The requested replacement of the chairman is due to a judgment of last resort in a vote-buying case of the municipal councilor Yanko Yankov from the “Citizens’ Alternative-VMRO”, which, according to the petitioners, calls into question the legitimate election of all representatives of the coalition.

According to the chairman of the committee on legality, lawyer Stefan Ankov from GERB, it is unfounded to enter the agenda of the discussion of the declaration. The reason is that the proposed document does not indicate a court decision. There is no decision of the Municipal Electoral Commission on the release of Yankov as a councilor because of the sentence.

Desislava Kaloyanova from “Vazrazhdane” stated that GERB is defending Yankov and Lazarova.

Yanko Yankov from the “Citizens’ Alternative-VMRO” commented that the Supreme Court of Cassation (SCC) actually overturned the only charge brought against him and added:

“Did you understand from the initials that Y.G.Ya. it’s me, everyone says that this is my verdict, it may be so, but in this decision it is categorically stated that Y.G.Ya. that the Supreme Court cancels the only charge brought against me. Until the MEC pronounces, I am a legitimate municipal councilor.”

In the end, the declaration was not accepted by the municipal council.

However, the point followed with the proposal for an early termination of the powers of the chairperson of the municipal council, Iveta Lazarova, again at the request of “Vazrazhdane” on the grounds of violations of the regulations.

However, after another portion of stormy debates, the planned secret vote was not reached. Although the necessary majority was gathered for the proposed 9-member electoral commission, there were not enough candidates for it. After a series of appeals, the motion to oust the president was ultimately not voted on.
