This year marks the 60th anniversary of the establishment of one of the landmark enterprises for Burgas – “Ocean Fishing”, recalled sailors who have earned their living from it for years.

Even last night, some of them must have gathered to drink and reminisce about the seafaring years at the newly opened Chinese restaurant in Lazur.

Yesterday’s date was not chosen by chance. It is significant: on April 24, 1964, the trawler “Phoenix” boarded the Bulgarian crew, which consisted mainly of sailors from the “Bulgarian Navy” Shipping Company. The first captain was Dimitar Velkov, and the chief mechanic was Milko Gerchev, according to the archives.

1970s – 1980s the fishing fleet had 38 trawlers, with over 6,000 crew. The ships mainly hunt in the Atlantic Ocean and in the western parts of the Indian Ocean.

After 1989, the liquidation of the ocean fishing fleet of Bulgaria began.

According to some, it was suppressed deliberately, because of private interests. While others refute this with facts, proving that it was not profitable.

Whichever of the two statements is true, there are still families with fond memories of that time.
