The quality of food in schools became a topic in the Veliko Tarnovo Municipal Council

BGN 169,000 from the municipal budget costs the maintenance of the main kitchen in the “St. Patriarch Evtimii”, where food is prepared for the students in the municipality every day, announced the mayor Daniel Panov after a question from the municipal councilor Angel Yanchev, who is also the director of the Vela Blagoeva Secondary School.

In the initial plan, the planned subsidy for ensuring the operation of the kitchen for 2024 is in the amount of BGN 173,000.

However, only 9 schools benefit from the canteen service.

The students have a hot lunch offered by the mother kitchen at “Bacho Kiro” Elementary School, “St. Patriarch Evtimii, “Vela Blagoeva” Elementary School, “Vladimir Komarov” Elementary School, “Hristo Botev” Primary School in Resen, “Neofit Rilski” Primary School in Kilifarevo, “Dr. Petar Beron” Primary School in Debelets, “Hristo Smirnenski” Primary School in Samovodene and OU “P. R. Slaveikov” in Tserova koria.

The total number of children being fed is around 800 in the last three years. In practice, these are also the students who use a cheaper lunch, and the total number of all students is 6,500. Thus, the rest are deprived of the opportunity to eat at lower prices, claims Angel Yanchev and even defines this fact as discrimination.

In response, Mayor Daniel Panov was adamant that the mother kitchen can prepare food for all schools in the municipality, as long as there is a desire on the part of parents and students.

Panov also reminded that, if the school managements wish, the means to make the school lunch cheaper can be used regardless of who provides the service.

He explained that BGN 111,000 was invested for the repair of the chair at the “Vladimir Komarov” University under a project from the “Regions in Growth” program. He also explained that there are 75 students from the municipal dormitory in the city VIII to XII class, but they do not use the canteen service because they do not have a room. Some time ago, the “Kolyu Ficheto” school had a chair, but now the building is owned by the Professional High School of Fashion Design, which is state-owned.

In 2022, a hand mixer and blender was purchased for BGN 638, and in 2023, a computer configuration was purchased for BGN 1,243. According to Daniel Panov, the kitchen was gasified, which significantly shortened the time for preparing food, which according to it is diverse and of high quality.
