Here is what Dr. Svetla Stamova told about the most impressive moments of her professional journey:

“At the beginning of my professional journey I met several fellow nephrologists. With incredible enthusiasm, they explained to me how the kidneys are organs that maintain balance in the human body. Just as if the anesthetist does not ensure the smooth work of the surgeon and the greatest operator will be hampered. I listened, I absorbed, but I thought that they spoke like that because they chose nephrology and it is normal to magnify these two organs. I went through all the stages of the system as a qualification – internal medicine, certifications and training in ultrasound and doppler, resuscitation and extracorporeal therapy, and I realized that this quiet workaholic is the specialty that I want to do because it really brings all the systems of the body together. In traditional Chinese medicine, the kidney is a collection of organs and functions, while in Western medicine, it is just an anatomical organ. 2000 years ago, the ancients discovered the method of treatment, by observing and summarizing symptoms, placing the kidneys in the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal axis. Thus, its good work ensures normal function of the other organs and any other damaged organ is reflected in the function of the kidneys. This function of a balancer, a filter, a producer of hormones and a growth factor, the kidneys do quietly and systematically. Sometimes at higher revs to get the job done, sometimes with quiet hints until 50% of their defense and compensation mechanisms wear out and stop working. And most often, this is my first meeting with their owners. Then when the patient looks in disbelief and says “but I have never had kidney disease, I have diabetes mellitus, high blood pressure, heart disease, my liver is enlarged, but I stopped drinking, my gland is not well, but i take pills. But I’ve never had kidney disease!’

So the quiet workaholic says – here I am, I’m in your body, but I’m here. For me, as a nephrologist who has often had this conversation with patients with Chronic Kidney Disease and for years together we have fought to preserve the remaining reserves of already damaged kidneys, it is a real joy that in recent years more and more worldwide talk about Metabolic – Cardio – Renal Syndrome. Thus, an increasing number of colleagues began to pay attention to kidney function and detect disorders at an early stage. New medications have also appeared, which, happily, the NHIF has begun to reimburse, so our patients also have the opportunity to use some innovations in medicine, the goals of which, at least at the moment, are not so much to restore the already nephrosclerotic glomeruli, but at least to stop or slow down – the further exhaustion of the others who are still working.

I am sincerely grateful to that old generation of doctors who loved their specialty, they made me see what was hidden from the eyes and love nephrology and those quiet workaholics – the kidneys.

Love them too, they are yours and they rely on you to take care of them more diligently”, shared the nephrologist of MC “Dr. Staykov” Burgas.
