Municipal officials in Sliven banned the movement of electric scooters in pedestrian areas, broadcast by BTA. The ban also applies to sidewalks in all populated areas, with the exception of marked sidewalk bicycle lanes, city gardens, squares, and children’s and sports grounds. The maximum permissible speed for movement in the city and populated areas of the municipality was reduced to 20 km/h.
The changes were adopted after a partial amendment of the Municipal Ordinance on Public Order. According to the new rules, the authorities of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and authorized municipal officials have the right to detain individual electric vehicles as evidence. The owner will receive their scooter after paying the appropriate fine.
Mayor Stefan Radev commented to journalists that the control for the implementation of this provision depends on coordination with the authorities of the Ministry of Internal Affairs. “This is a problem not only for Sliven and Bulgaria, but on a European scale. We expect to have an educational effect for young people,” explained Radev. And he added that some offenders are ready to pay BGN 50 and disturb the peace of others.
Earlier it became clear that a similar ban was being prepared in Ruse as well.
