Stoycho Bonev, nicknamed Tokata, asked to be released from custody due to illness and an allegation of shaky reasoned assumption of possessing for the purpose of distributing 27.2 kg of marijuana for BGN 544,000 in Klokotnitsa. On this occasion, his lawyer Mitko Georgiev submitted to the District Court – Haskovo an application to change the remand measure imposed on him “detention in custody”. The lawyer specified that the accused has a deteriorating health condition and stomach pains, creating obstacles for him to stay in custody. He requested that a forensic medical examination be appointed, to which the prosecutor in the case, Delcho Lavchev, did not object, but specified questions to which the expert, Dr. Hristo Elenski, must answer. The expert will have to establish exactly what illness Stoycho Bonev is suffering from, what treatment should be undertaken and whether it can be carried out in custody.

Thus, judge Anna Petkova postponed the case and scheduled it for April 29 at 2 p.m., when the coroner’s conclusion must be presented.

Tokata was arrested on March 11, 2024, together with 49-year-old Nikolay Kolev during a specialized operation by officers from the “Fighting Organized Crime” (BOP). The two men are accused of possession with the purpose of distribution of the drug, which was discovered in a car repair shop in Klokotnitsa. Bonev was already convicted of theft, but was rehabilitated. Kolev’s last conviction was suspended and was from 2013, which was for the same crime – drug possession with the intent to distribute drugs on a large scale.

If proven guilty, the law provides for a penalty of 5 to 15 years in prison and a fine of 20,000 to 100,000 BGN.
