The European Parliament voted on a resolution warning of Russian interference in Bulgaria’s elections on June 9. One of the authors of the document, the MEP from GERB/ENP Andrey Kovachev explains in the audiocast of “Focus” “This is Bulgaria” what will result from this resolution.

“The resolution is based on allegations of Russian interference in the European Parliament, but also on the upcoming elections for the European Parliament and the impact on the EU of these attempts by the Russian Federation to interfere, which are not from today or from last month, but have been constant since the last years, especially after the start of the war in Ukraine,” Kovachev pointed out.

“The interference is very intense at different levels, through the agents of influence of the Russian Federation in political parties, in the media, in social platforms. These are agents of influence in economic institutes, in the non-governmental sector, and they are extremely targeted, as for every country- member are specific on certain sensitive topics – history, traditions, religion. And everything that is most sensitive and with which public attitudes can be most easily changed and the hearts and souls of European citizens can be won,” Kovachev believes. .

“Through the text in the document, concern is expressed for the whole of the European Union, but one paragraph in the general resolution, with the political parties having separate texts and then gathering and uniting around the relevant text that they all agreed on. The common text that will be it was voted by the EPP, the socialists, the liberals, the Greens and the reformists and the conservatives in the European Parliament. So it is expected that there will be a very serious majority for the adoption of this text,” the MEP pointed out.

According to him, paragraph 15 of the document expresses concern about credible reports of increasing attempts by Russia to interfere in the upcoming elections for the Bulgarian National Parliament on June 9 and strong concern about the existence of networks of disinformation agents operating on social media platforms , in traditional media, academia, NGOs, political parties and about Russian control of these networks. Strong concern is expressed regarding the numerous properties on the territory of Bulgaria that are currently owned by the Russian authorities, some of these properties being of strategic importance and serving as centers of Russian influence and exerting pressure on the country’s democratic processes.

When asked who these media and organizations are that misinform EU citizens, the MEP replied that there are many of them.

“In the latest report of the Foundation for Humanitarian and Social Studies in Sofia, the media reflection of the image of the EU in over 8,000 sites and online blogs in Bulgarian throughout 2023 is followed. In 2023 alone, over 400,000 anti-European publications were circulated and they are trying to portray persistently anti-European narratives that are general enough to be easily adapted for the interpretation of any specific political events and processes, with the desire to slowly change public attitudes in Bulgaria in the direction of the narrative of the Russian Federation,” he pointed out also Andrey Kovachev.

The MEP also said that the report of the Foundation for Humanitarian and Social Research is 150 pages long, everything is described in it in great detail. Anyone interested in this report can find it very easily online and it lists all the Bulgarian sites that have been monitored by the foundation as rebroadcasting the main narratives of the Russian Federation, that the EU is presented as the collective West, that it is the villain waging war against Russia, that the EU is painted as complicit with NATO and the US for the war in Ukraine.

And in general, not only for Ukraine, but also for all kinds of problems and wars, that it is a heavy bureaucracy, which is a dictatorship over national states, against sovereignty. The European Union sets itself up as the master of local pro-European political parties, etc.

Including the whole gender ideology, against liberalism, against all human freedoms with various goals of this propaganda. The main goal, of course, is to change public attitudes.
