The Mayor of Pazardzhik Municipality, Petar Kulenski, has started work on drafting an ordinance to supplement the food for each child in the Children’s Milk Kitchen. In this way, the Municipality of Pazardzhik will strive to provide social support for all parents and their children in the Municipality, which will reduce the cost of daily meals for children by two to three times.

Many parents in the city have voiced their concerns in meetings with the administration. The management has looked at good practices from nearby municipalities, where final prices for parents reach BGN 2-3 per daily meal, while in Pazardzhik they are many times higher – nearly BGN 6.

Mayor Kulenski opposed the alternative and hotly contested proposal for a one-time financial support for parents, submitted by the municipal councilors from Novote Vrema. All other municipal councilors opposed the proposal, defining it as a highly discriminatory – illegal educational discrimination requirement by the “Novote vreme” group that a financial incentive be received only by parents with a higher education or only with two parents with at least a secondary education, and not all those living and raising their children in Pazardzhik.

The councilor from PP-DB Dr. Elisaveta Gencheva stated that the proposal is insufficiently substantiated, there are gross errors in the figures and there are discriminatory texts. “You associate birth with additional material stimulation, and I thought that children are born not with money, but with love. And can you formulate a definition of responsible and irresponsible parenting – there is no way for us to judge and define this. We need to start with improving living conditions,” said Dr. Gencheva. According to the councilor from “BSP for Bulgaria” Liliana Murhova-Prisadnikova, the draft regulation will deprive single parents of funds at all, because the point formation is formulated in such a way that single parents cannot qualify, when it is obvious that in such cases they would be in particularly great need .
