Residents of the city and nature lovers met with Prof. Hristo Pimpirev and the team of the second polar mission of the Bulgarian military research ship “St. St. Cyril and Methodius”, reports Plovdiv24.bg.
We remind you that the Regional Museum of Natural History in Plovdiv won a project from the “Culture” fund, which started the construction of the world’s first exhibition ice aquarium.
The director of the museum Dr. Ognyan Todorov, the mayor of Plovdiv Kostadin Dimitrov and other visitors who came for the event were also present in the “Planetarium” hall.
“My life is there, so I am there like at home”, this is how Prof. Pimpirev began his story about Antarctica.
“There is the other Bulgaria, which is the better part of Bulgaria, because there we live as a team. There we don’t fight, we don’t argue with assemblies, we don’t change governments, everyone just does his job and the results are visible.”
Prof. Pimpirev’s idea is for two scientists from the museum to attend the next expedition to Antarctica and to enrich the fauna with more fish, starfish, snails, clams and other invertebrates to enrich the collection.
Mayor Kostadin Dimitrov stated that an option for the expansion of the museum is being considered, with a view to doing some kind of reconstruction of the hall for newlyweds, which will be transferred to the museum. This should be agreed with the Ministry of Culture to reach a good agreement.
The director of the Plovdiv Regional Museum of Natural History, Dr. Ognyan Todorov, told the camera:
“The fish has acclimatized, is eating, feels great. Next year we will do another expedition, this one together with Prof. Hristo Pimpirev and two of my editors will be present at the whole expedition. We will already increase the diversity in the aquarium. This year it was like that, a test venture. It turned out to be successful, which actually gives us wings to move forward.”
In reality, there are two other aquariums like ours in the world, but they are not exhibition. So that makes us unique in the world in this direction. This is the world’s only exhibition ice aquarium – the others are in Chile and Aglia,” he added.
The ice aquarium has a capacity of 12 thousand liters, the temperature in the room is -5 degrees, and the water varies from -1 to +1-2 degrees.
We remind you that at the beginning of the expedition, two fish intended for the latest exhibition “Antarctica” in the Museum of Natural History in Plovdiv traveled, but one of them could not survive on the Bulgarian research ship that returned from Antarctica.
