The price of electricity in the EU stabilizes after the crises in 2022.

The price of electricity in the EU in the second half of 2023 stabilized after the sharp price increase in 2022, according to Eurostat data. The average price in the EU reached 0.2847 euros per kilowatt hour, compared to 0.294 euros per kilowatt hour in the first quarter of last year.

The data show that the price is decreasing in 13 EU countries and increasing in the remaining 13. Romania is not part of the statistics because it has a different methodology for calculating the price of electricity, Eurostat specifies.

The data for Bulgaria show that electricity in our country is one of the cheapest in the EU – 0.1192 euros per kilowatt hour. Compared to the first quarter, there is a slight increase.

The lowest price of electricity is in Hungary (0.1132 euros per kilowatt hour), although the VAT on electricity is the highest in the country and reaches 21.3%. At the opposite pole is Malta, where the amount of VAT is 4.8% and thanks to this the price is the third lowest in the EU or 0.1279 euros per kilowatt hour.

On average in the EU, the share of taxes and various fees in the price was almost 22% in the second half of last year. One of the most significant taxes is VAT, which averages 13.7%.

The most significant increase in the price of electricity in the last months of 2023 was in the Netherlands – by over 86%. However, the reason is the elimination of measures to protect consumers from the effects of the energy crisis. By 81%, the price of electricity is also rising in the Czech Republic, and in Poland the growth is almost 27%.
