/Pogled.info/ The head of the Delegation of the Bulgarian Socialists, Petar Vitanov, told journalists in Strasbourg that he will not be a candidate for a mandate in the next European Parliament. Vitanov was named by Eumatrix as the most influential Bulgarian MEP, and today he was also recognized as the most active representative from Bulgaria in the ranking “Health Policy leaders 2024”, which measures the influence in the formation of policies in the EU in the field of healthcare.

“I am happy about this high evaluation, because health care is a key part of the lives of Bulgarians and what we accept today in the European Parliament will become part of our daily life in a few years,” commented Vitanov.

On the occasion of his work in the EP and the criticism of the BSP’s close leadership that he did not report his activities, the socialist specified: “My report is several dozen pages long and was presented to the party. I dare to say that I am one of the active deputies. I am satisfied with the things I have done. But the most important thing is that I have not deviated one iota from my principles, from my understandings and from those of the Bulgarian left-wing people who elected me. So I want to thank them for the opportunity.”

In front of journalists in Strasbourg, where the last session of the European Parliament is taking place, Vitanov also answered the question of whether he will run for office again.

“I will not participate in the election campaign. I have held talks with many people and parties, but I decided that I would not like to get involved at the moment. I have many like-minded people in “Solidary Bulgaria”, I sympathize with Vanya Grigorova. I also have many friends in “Levitsa” who will run for office. I also have many comrades in the BSP. It is difficult at this moment for people like me, who remember the time when the left was united and consolidated, to watch how it is scattered and divided”, commented Petar Vitanov and added: “I remain faithful to my principles and understandings. They’ve always been left-wing.”

Vitanov also announced that the nomination of Elena Yoncheva from DPS was a surprise: “I respect Elena and her decision. If you’re asking if I would take it, I wouldn’t take it.”

Petar Vitanov hopes that the left parties in Bulgaria will be able to unite.

“What is currently happening in Bulgaria has a destructive, destructive image and will have lasting, severe negative consequences – reputational, political and economic”, predicted the MEP.
