The attack in Burgas and the kidnapping of Bulgarian sailors – in the draft resolution of the EP on Iran

The terrorist attack on the airport in the Burgas district “Sarafovo” in 2012 and the kidnapping of two Bulgarian sailors in November 2023 were included in a draft resolution of the European Parliament (EP) on Iran. It is expected to be voted on today and is dedicated to the Islamic Republic’s attack on Israel.

Among its proponents are two Bulgarian MEPs – Elena Yoncheva from the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats and Andrey Kovachev from the European People’s Party.

MEPs accuse the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps of being involved in planning or carrying out a number of operations, assassinations and terrorist attacks on EU territory over the past 30 years.

Among them is the explosion of a bus at the airport in the Sarafovo quarter, which killed the Bulgarian driver and five tourists from Israel.

According to the well-founded assumption of the Bulgarian authorities, the assassination was the work of the Lebanese Shiite group “Hezbollah”, supported by Iran. The two perpetrators are of Lebanese origin and are included in the EU terrorist list.

The MEPs insist that the Corps should also be declared a terrorist organization.

The text, including the explosion in “Sarafovo”, was submitted by MEPs from the EPP.

MEPs are also calling on the EU and member states to consolidate and step up efforts to ensure the safe and immediate release of all hostages from the Galaxy Leader ship captured in the Red Sea in November.

The attack was carried out by Iran-backed Yemeni Houthis. There are three EU citizens on board – two Bulgarians and one Romanian, as well as three Ukrainians. The text about the Bulgarian sailors was introduced by Socialist MEPs.
