In Veliko Tarnovo schools, there is discrimination against children because of the cheap canteen meals. This was stated by the school director and municipal councilor from “Vazrazhdane” Angel Yanchev at today’s session of the Veliko Tarnovo Municipal Council.
The mayor, Daniel Panov, denied this and pointed out that the schools cannot be obliged to enter into contracts with the pupils for their meals.
Students in Veliko Tarnovo pay from BGN 2.40 to over BGN 4 for a meal. 12 out of 21 municipal schools use the municipal kitchen-mother, and the children with the expensive coupons are fed by companies hired by the schools under catering contracts.
“Lunch is cheaper for less than 25% of all students. It is interesting why nine, and with the municipal student dormitory “Kolyu Ficheto”, 10 school institutions do not benefit from the cheaper lunch or dinner,” asked Angel Yanchev.
This is not discrimination, the meals of the students are of high quality and at the low price of the coupon, answered the mayor of Veliko Tarnovo, Daniel Panov:
“This is a service provided by the Municipality. The students who wish to eat in the chair, use food that has been qualitatively prepared under these conditions. The decision of the schools to use catering services is their decision”.
Starting from the new school year, the student meal coupon in Veliko Tarnovo will probably become more expensive, Mayor Panov also pointed out.
