The story of Georgi Drazhev should be included in the curriculum so that it is known and told by generations. This was suggested by a student from the High School of Construction and Architecture, Graphics and Design “Kole Ficheto” – Yambol during a discussion with a quiz organized by the Municipality of Yambol and the Regional History Museum on April 26.
Today marks 176 years since the birth of Georgi Drazhev, and in these days we also celebrate 151 years since the founding of the Secret Revolutionary Committee and 148 years since the April Uprising, recalled Tsvetanka Andreeva, curator at the Regional History Museum. She and her colleague Tanya Ivanova translated representative teams of GSAGD “Kole Ficheto”, Vocational High School of Economics “G. S. Rakovski”, Vocational High School of Tourism “Aleko Konstantinov” and Primary School “Lyuben Karavelov” during the memorable historical events that led to the liberation of Yambol and Bulgaria.
Georgi Drazhev, like Botev, died at the age of 28 for freedom, just like Vasil Levski was publicly hanged together with Zheko Andreev, just like Lyuben Karavelov, he was from a wealthy family and had the opportunity to choose the peaceful life of the wealthy over his participation in the revolutionary committee. But this “iron geranium”, as described by the chronicler of the preparations for the April Uprising in Yambol, Nikola Verhovski, as well as his entire family, chose self-sacrifice. Thanks to him, to Zahari Velichkov, to Nikola pop Ivanov and the other participants in the Secret Revolutionary Committee in Yambol, as well as to the other heroes of Bulgaria, today we are free, were the conclusions of the students.
In the quiz, the young people showed a good knowledge of Yambol’s renaissance period and were adamant that, both through such discussions and through the lessons, they should have the opportunity to learn more about the history of the city.
