The District Prosecutor’s Office in Stara Zagora is conducting an investigation into possible police violence that caused the death of a detained man in the regional city. This is reported by “Now”.
A report claims that on July 14 at around 4:40 p.m., a man was arrested at the intersection between Alexander Batenberg Blvd. and Tsar Simeon Veliki Blvd. in Stara Zagora. He was riding in a car that was stopped by the police. According to eyewitnesses, even during the detention, the authorities of the Ministry of Internal Affairs used violence. The man was taken to Parvo Police Station, and a few hours later he was pronounced dead.
“My husband was informed about his death at around 10:00 p.m. They lied to him that he died in the ambulance they called, but both the doctor and the ambulance driver said that he was brought out dead by Parvo Police Station.
On July 16, we buried our son. The whole family, his friends and relatives who were at the funeral saw that he was disfigured by fighting,” said the letter, whose author identified himself as the deceased man’s mother.
Questions were sent to the ODMVR-Stara Zagora, as well as to the press center of the Ministry of the Interior, whether there really was such a detention, to which police station the arrested person was taken and what was the cause of his death. However, the law enforcement agency only replied that the case is under investigation.
The spokeswoman of the District Prosecutor’s Office in Stara Zagora, prosecutor Tanya Dimitrova, said that a pre-trial proceeding was initiated in the case for illegal possession of drugs, which were found during a search of a car. However, the cause of the detainee’s death is being investigated by the county coroner’s office.
The District Prosecutor’s Office in Stara Zagora confirmed that there is such a case. Its spokesperson, Georgi Videv, said only that it is conducted under Art. 123 of the Penal Code, which is for causing death by negligence.
