DEVELOPMENT OF THE MATCH

FIRST QUARTER

Rosen Barchovski started the match with the following starting five: Dee Bost, Stanimir Marinov, Ivan Alipiev, Alexander Vezenkov and Emil Stoilov. It was the latter who scored the first basket in the game and put the “lions” ahead 2:0. A three-pointer by Stanimir Marinov made it 5:4 in our favor. “La Furia” made it 8:5, and then Stoilov scored 2 points from the penalty line. Vezenkov missed from the triple, but Fernandez was accurate and Spain won 14:9. Rosen Barchowski picked up the first layup at 9:15 as his players missed several easy shots under the basket. With 2 minutes, 45 seconds remaining, Vezenkov was fouled and stood at the line to cut the deficit to 13:20. The gaps in our ranks continued and Spain won almost every fight to pull away 26-13. The first quarter ended with a score of 28:17 after a three-pointer by Sasho Vezenkov.

SECOND THURSDAY

The part started with three points for Fernandez, but then Chavdar Kostov also scored a triple in 20:31. After a struggle in Pradia’s attack, Fernandez rose again for 3 and the difference swelled to 16 points – 36:20. Barchovski took a timeout with 6:23 remaining, but the effect was zero and after the fifth three-pointer, Spain led 41:22. A nice breakthrough by Kostov brought the 26th point to the “lions'” asset, and then Marinov had a chance to reduce the gap even more, but missed from the triple. Dee Bost combined with Emil Stoilov, who finished with a dunk in 29:45. Chavdar Kostov was fouled twice, but missed two of his four shots in 33:49. Javi Fernandez scored another three-pointer for the first double-digit difference in the game – 54:33, and the second quarter ended with a score of 57:35.

THIRD QUARTER

The third part started evenly, and Stanimir Marinov stole a ball in the center and scored for 41:61. A triple by Lorenzo Brown followed, and Emil Stoilov scored the tenth point for 43:63. Rosen Barchowski took a break at 48:71. Sasho Vezenkov scored a nice three-pointer, and subsequently the score became 51:76. Pavlin Ivanov added three points in 59:84 minutes and 46 seconds before the end. Marinov scored two points from the free throw line, and the third quarter ended at 89:66 for Spain.

LAST THURSDAY

Alexander Vezenkov opened the last ten minutes with a successful two-point shot, but Rudy Fernandes scored another three-pointer for 92:68. Pavlin Ivanov answered with a triple for Bulgaria. Dee Bost shot short, then Rudy Fernandez scored twice from the penalty line to make it 100-74.

BEFORE THE MATCH

For Bulgaria, this is the first participation in EuroBasket in 11 years! During the group phase, the “lions” will also meet the hosts from Georgia, Montenegro, Turkey and Belgium (Group “A”). The first four teams in the final ranking continue to the 1/8-finals, which will be held in Germany.

The reigning champion of the competition is Slovenia. Led by Dallas Mavericks star Luka Doncic, the Slovenians won their debut European title, defeating one of the most experienced teams in the face of Serbia. Slovenia is in Group B, which also includes France, Lithuania, one of the hosts Germany, Hungary and Bosnia and Herzegovina. The Serbs are in Group D along with the Czech Republic, Poland, Finland, Israel and the Netherlands. In the last Group “C”, the teams of Italy, Greece, Croatia, Ukraine, Great Britain and Estonia will compete.

*The record holder for European titles is the USSR with 14, followed by Yugoslavia with 8. The Spanish and the Lithuanians have three awards each, and Bulgaria has one silver and one bronze in the history of their participation in European championships!
