Poland has a new “conservative” estimate of the damage from the Nazi occupation – $1320 billion.

Poland estimates its World War II losses caused by Nazi Germany at 6.2 trillion zlotys ($1.32 trillion), the leader of the country’s ruling nationalists said Thursday.

Jarosław Kaczynski, leader of the “Law and Justice” (PiS) party, added at a press conference that Warsaw will formally demand reparations from Berlin 77 years after the end of the war.

The new estimate exceeds a ruling party lawmaker’s forecast of $850 billion from 2019. Law and Justice has repeated calls for compensation several times since it took power in 2015, but Warsaw has so far not formally demanded reparations.

“The amount that was presented was adopted according to the most limited, conservative method and it would be possible to increase it,” Kaczynski was quoted as saying by Reuters.

The combative stance towards Germany, often used by PiS to mobilize its voters, has strained relations with Berlin. It intensified after Russia invaded Ukraine, amid criticism of Berlin’s dependence on Russian gas and its slowness in helping Kyiv.

About six million Poles, including three million Polish Jews, were killed during the war, and Warsaw was razed to the ground after a 1944 uprising that killed an estimated 200,000 civilians.
