Prof. Ovcharov: Another pearl will be added to Perperikon’s pearl necklace

/CROSS/ In defiance of all those who wanted us to fail, despite the cruel financial restrictions”, points out Prof. Nikolay Ovcharov

Although we were deprived of state funding, at Perperikon we are facing a spectacular discovery, writes Prof. Nikolay Ovcharov in an open position to the media.

In spite of all those who wished us to fail, despite severe financial constraints, we hope that by the end of next week we will be able to clear the remains of the ancient temple. Thus, one more pearl will be added to Perperikon’s pearl necklace,” Prof. Ovcharov is emphatic.

Here is the full text of his position:

To everyone, for whom it is not the most important how many parties Nastimir Ananiev changed before the next early elections, but what will happen to Bulgarian culture and history!!!

Although we were deprived of state funding, at Perperikon, we are facing a spectacular discovery!

Over the next three days we go inside the newly discovered pagan temple in the rock city – the best preserved stone building found there so far. For the first time, we will see the inner structure of such a shrine and what rituals are performed there!

As it turned out, this year the most famous archaeological site in Bulgaria – the rock city of Perperikon near Kardjali, was scandalously deprived of the state subsidy provided for in the National Budget for 2022. The Quadruple Coalition government is to blame for this, and now the official cabinet , who could also solve this. I leave this failure of the very idea of developing cultural and historical tourism in our country to their conscience. If they have one…!

Despite the abdication of the state, the excavations are taking place and are coming to an end thanks to the Municipality of Kardzhali. She allocated BGN 85,000 – an amount that is indeed almost four times less than the intended state subsidy, but still allowed the season to be non-zero.

But the result is fantastic. As I said at the beginning of the explorations in July, we had hoped, near the Great Temple with the altar of Dionysus, to come across another dedicated to one of the Thracian deities. What surfaced, however, exceeded all our expectations.

We are now certain that we are indeed uncovering a pagan temple of the period 3-4th century, functioning immediately before the adoption of Christianity at the beginning of the 5th century. But no one expected that this would be the best-preserved building so far uncovered in 23 years of excavations at Perperikon. In places, the walls, built of magnificently carved stone blocks, reach a height of 3 m.

First revealed was the vestibule of the sanctuary, where there is a perfectly carved basin where worshipers washed their hands before entering the hallowed interior. The door of the temple is from the south, and it itself develops to the north, as was accepted with pagan holy places.

At the moment, with a dozen workers, we are starting to enter the most important part of the temple – the central room. The embankments are huge, and inside the massive stone walls have collapsed. However, after their removal, the mysterious elements of an unknown pagan cult began to emerge. These are rock-cut pools and channels for draining the blood of sacrificed animals. These ritual facilities stand out clearly above the perfectly smoothed stone floor.

Despite severe financial constraints, we hope that by the end of next week we will be able to clear the remains of the ancient temple. Thus, another pearl will be added to Perperikon’s pearl necklace. In defiance of all those who so wished us to fail!
