After the demolition of a tobacco warehouse in Plovdiv, Minekov promised protection for the buildings

The demolition of one of the tobacco warehouses in Plovdiv, which began on Thursday afternoon, ended late at night despite the attempts of the Minister of Culture Velislav Minekov to stop it. The demolition was stopped while he was there, but was completed after he left, Nova TV reported. In response, he threatened that today he will sign a decision granting the status of an immovable cultural value to the complex of buildings. Minekov also stated that he would have forced the investors in the field to rebuild the demolished building.

The demolition of the building coincided with the holding of the Specialized Council for the Protection of National Cultural Values, which had to decide on the status of the building. Just a week ago, another warehouse was demolished in Plovdiv – on “Hristo Botev” Street. The one that shines on Thursday is located on the corner of “G. M. Dimitrov” and “Exarch Yosif” streets. This building was damaged in a fire years ago.

Formally, the demolition is part of the “Safety and Health Plan” of the Plovdiv municipality. The procedure was initiated by the “Central” district.

On Thursday, Minekov admitted that until the Council’s decision enters into force, the institutions cannot do anything. By this time, almost nothing remained of the building. In this case, an inspection of the building control was also started, but there were no results.

The minister commented that the demolition was an outrage. He added that he would not allow it at any cost.

They probably think I’m idle. They probably think I’m being bribed. They probably think I will be threatened in some way. It will never happen“, he said.
