Dimitar Kuzmanov and Alexander Lazarov will play in the main singles draw of the Sofia Open 2022 tournament. The competition is from September 25 to October 2 in “Arena Armeets”. They received a wild card and enter the battle directly without qualifications. Thus, the three highest-ranked native players are on the line in front of the Bulgarian audience – our first racket Grigor Dimitrov, as well as Kuzmanov and Lazarov, who are the backbone of our team in the Davis Cup.

This completes the stellar line-up of the seventh edition of the competition in the ATP 250 category.

Kuzmanov’s rise in the world rankings continues – currently the 29-year-old from Plovdiv occupies his record 159th place in the world. That year, he recorded victories in the qualifiers of all four Grand Slam tournaments.

Last year, Kuzmanov recorded his first main draw win in Sofia after a turnaround and prestigious success over rising Italian star and current World Top 30 member Lorenzo Musetti.

Alexander Lazarov will also record a record ranking after a strong showing at the Challenger tournament currently taking place at Rafael Nadal’s academy in Mallorca. This will be the sixth appearance for the 24-year-old Lazarov in the strong ATP tournament on home soil and fourth overall appearance in the main draw.

In 2019, Alex became the pleasant surprise of the Bulgarian fans when he won the qualifiers with victories over two of the favorites in the screenings to reach a match in the main draw against one of his childhood idols Fernando Verdasco.

The third wild card entrant to Sofia Open 2022 is three-time Grand Slam champion Stan Wawrinka. The Swiss – a veteran of Bulgarian tennis, will once again delight the people in Sofia, where he is one of the big favorites.

The list of participants in the seventh edition of the race is impressive. Apart from Dimitrov, Kuzmanov and Lazarov, there are Yanik Siner – two-time No. 1 in Sofia, one of the most attractive tennis players – Gael Monfils, the current No. 10 in the world Hubert Hurkach, the champion of the “Masters” tournament in Montreal Pablo Carreno Busta, another of the big showmen on the tour – Alexander Bublik, the Italian star of the future Lorenzo Musetti and many other world names.

“I am extremely happy that I will participate in the Sofia Open 2022, which is actually a tournament for the ATP 500 category – commented Kuzmanov. – I hope there will be many people, the hall will be full, since in the past years there were problems due to the pandemic.

I hope now to fully feel all this emotion – a victory in front of the hot Bulgarian audience in the hall. Moreover, the tournament is probably one of the strongest. This is a prerequisite for the fans to fill the hall and make it a wonderful tournament. People are thirsty for sports. Sofia Open is one of the most important events for me. I am a part of it in each of the seven editions, for which I am grateful to the Bulgarian Tennis Federation, the organizers of the tournament, the sponsors, everyone who makes it happen, at the highest level.

The fact that Grigor is on the list is good enough news for everyone in Bulgaria. I have always said that when he plays, it is good not only for tennis and for the future of tennis in our country, it is good for the children, for Bulgarian sports in general, for the fans. I urge people to come and enjoy this wonderful tournament. To realize what a treasure it is for Bulgaria to have him. Sofia Open is not just wealth for tennis, but wealth for sports and for the future of Bulgarian children.”
