This year is zero for Bulgarian archaeology. This was stated by the Acting Minister of Culture Prof. Velislav Minekov at a briefing.
“The bravest archaeologists started work, expecting that they would get funding, but archaeologists by and large did not start work. No further conservation of the sites was done. The tragedy there is complete,” he added.
In conservation and restoration, the budget remains untouched, Prof. Minekov also said. “And my favorite column in the budget – capital expenditures, of BGN 55 million, says zero percent expenditures,” he added.
“I don’t know if you understand what kind of damage this is. And at the same time, I went to the Minister of Finance to ask for an increase in the budget – since at the end of the year, it is very possible that we will return 50 or 60 million BGN as burned in the air. This is an absurd situation. This is complete absurdity,” the minister also said.
According to him, such outrage has never occurred in the ministry. “This budget ended sometime at the end of October or November, additional funds were requested. And we will return money – this has not happened in the last 30 years,” Prof. Minekov added. He added that it was an “extremely uncomfortable situation” in which he was placed.
