A huge forest fire is raging on an area of 428 square km, in the Kostanay region of Northern Kazakhstan.

The affected areas are equal to nearly 40% of the territory of Bulgaria.

Hundreds of people have been evacuated, Reuters reported, citing the Ministry of Emergency Situations.

At least four people were killed and 11 injured in the flames that broke out on Saturday. In just a few hours, the area covered in flames tripled due to the hot weather and strong winds.

In the village of Amankaragai, on the edge of a burning forest, on Monday, firefighters put out fires amid the debris of charred buildings and cars, BTA writes.

But according to Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Emergencies, the fire has already been extinguished in the populated areas and now the firefighters will focus on the burning forest massifs. “The situation is serious but stable,” a ministry spokesman said.

According to the Russian Interfax agency, more than 100 houses were burned and 10 people were injured. An 86-year-old invalid who refused to evacuate died.

The head of the Ministry of Emergency Situations did not rule out that the cause of the fires could be a human factor, “since in recent days we have not had natural phenomena in the form of lightning”.

About 1,500 firefighters and soldiers, two helicopters and an airplane, as well as five fire-fighting trains are involved in the extinguishing.

As a result of the prolonged heat wave, forest fires have also been raging in parts of neighboring Russia since last month, Reuters notes.
