Today we celebrate 137 years since the Unification of the Principality of Bulgaria and Eastern Rumelia.

On September 6, 1885, thousands of Bulgarians, living in an artificially divided territory, united and lived together without a geographical division standing between them.

Bulgaria was united thanks to the activities of the Bulgarian Secret Central Revolutionary Committee (BTCRC), established in 1880. This happened after a military coup, which was supported by Prince Alexander I of Battenberg.

The country was divided into the Principality of Bulgaria and Eastern Rumelia, which fell within the borders of the Ottoman Empire, by the Great Powers at the Congress of Berlin in June 1878.

Head of BTCRC in February 1885. stands Zahari Stoyanov, who undertakes the task of propagandizing the idea of the unification of the homeland through publications in the press and organizing public events. One such event is the one on Mount Buzludja after the death of Hadji Dimitar, to which people from both the Principality of Bulgaria and Eastern Rumelia flock.

Due to the unjust dismemberment of Bulgaria with the Berlin Treaty, the unification of its territory and national liberation became the main priority and the denouement of the Bulgarian people. Zahari Stoyanov is one of the people who support the idea of uniting the homeland under the scepter of Prince Alexander I.

Thus, after preparations that began in the autumn of 1885 and supported by senior military personnel, on September 6, rebels entered Plovdiv and overthrew the Governor-General Gavril Krastevich, appointed by the Sultan. Georgi Stranski heads the created interim government.

Early in the morning of September 6, the Unification was announced in Plovdiv. This is an unprecedented act that has redrawn the map and history of Europe.

In the time after this joyful day for the whole nation, however, comes the challenge to preserve and protect the Union. A number of public figures and revolutionaries gave their lives for this national cause, which was born and lived for years in the minds and hearts of Bulgarians, unjustly divided by the Great Powers.

The holiday will be celebrated with celebrations and other initiatives throughout the country.

President Rumen Radev will visit Plovdiv, where he will participate in the solemn ceremony on the occasion of the 137th anniversary of the Unification of the Principality of Bulgaria and Eastern Rumelia.

At 8:30 p.m., on Union Square, the head of state will take part in the ceremonial dawn inspection and will accept the line of honor. At 8:45 p.m., the president will deliver a speech.

The solemn ceremony in Plovdiv will also be attended by Vice President Iliana Yotova.
