“When we have been together as a people, we have overcome the vicissitudes of history”. This was noted by the mayor of Plovdiv, Zdravko Dimitrov, in his speech on the occasion of the 137th anniversary of the Unification. The city under the hills also celebrates its holiday.
Here is the full text of the address of the mayor of Plovdiv:
“Dear fellow citizens,
Today, when we solemnly celebrate the 137th anniversary of the Unification of Bulgaria, we, the people of Plovdiv, proudly remember the date September 6, 1885.
The intransigence and desire for freedom of our ancestors gave rise to the idea of opposing the Berlin Treaty, which artificially divided the Bulgarian people.
The unification of the Principality of Bulgaria and Eastern Rumelia is a memorable date in our recent history. It is also a reason to remember that only when we were together as a nation did we overcome the vicissitudes of history.
National unification is an occasion today, from the distance of time, to look for solutions to political issues for the future of our country.
Today is the holiday of our thousand-year-old city. Let’s be proud that with common efforts we manage to preserve its history and make it an increasingly better place for our children.
Happy holiday, people of Plovdiv!
Happy holiday, compatriots!”
