For more than 20 years, a life-size model of a monument to the Unification has stood in the square

Plovdiv has been fighting for exactly 100 years to have a monument to the Unification, after a number of competitions for the monument never led to a final conclusion. Already in 1925 the foundations of the monument were laid, but the monument was never erected.

In 1939 it was decided to make a mock-up of the monument on “Saedinenie” square. A life-size model has been erected on the concrete plinth and is located directly opposite the Thursday Market. It is with the market that one of the big problems of not having a monument is connected. Local people fear that the market will be destroyed and are against the monument. In 1939 the life-size model of the “Union” monument by the sculptor Kiril Todorov has been placed, and this is exactly how the monument should look in reality.

In a publication in the Yug newspaper, we read that the total length of the monument was supposed to be 17 meters and 20 cm and cost about 2 million BGN. It had to be erected in a year and a half. The monument depicts northern and southern Bulgaria.

However, due to the fact that it is still relevant today – lack of funds, the monument never became a reality.

The Unification monument, due to the rising cost of materials, cannot be built with the collected funds. The committee appeals to all municipalities in the district to include in their budgets aid for the completion of the monument. The Plovdiv municipality is mostly interested, as it will be built in the city. For this reason, the budget provides assistance for its completion, wrote in 1942. Plovdiv Municipal Gazette.

Considering that Bulgaria has already entered the Second World War, the monument never became a fact, only the mock-up remains.

With the advent of communism, a life-size model remained on the square, but in the 1960s it was decided to remove it due to the construction of the building of the design organization.

Only in 1985 Plovdiv is finally getting a real monument to the Unification. In fact, the decision came as early as 1984, when it was decided that the 100-year anniversary should be properly celebrated. Then traditionally for big anniversaries such as 100 years of the April Uprising – 1976 and 1300 Bulgaria in 1981. are lavishly celebrated by the then communist government.

The Thursday market has been moved to its current location.

It is curious that after the opening of the monument in 1985 even the Plovdiv press lacks a small line to commemorate the Unification in 1986.
