“Unification is one of the best Bulgarian holidays. A day in which the Bulgarian spirit celebrates, showing intransigence. Despite the decisions of the great powers – Eastern Rumelia and the Principality of Bulgaria are united. In view of today’s holiday and the upcoming elections – I call on everyone to be more united, not to forget that Unity makes strength. Let’s be with those who need support, let’s help our friends in Karlovsko in this difficult time. We have proven more than once that united we are stronger, that together we can do more”, said the mayor of Stara Zagora, Zhivko Todorov, in his speech.
On the occasion of September 6 – Day of the Unification of the Principality of Bulgaria with Eastern Rumelia, the Municipality of Stara Zagora and the Second Tundzha Mechanized Brigade organized a city-wide ritual to bow to the deed and feat of the participants in the Unification by laying wreaths and flowers in front of the “Defenders of Stara Zagora” monument in Fifth October Park. The host of the event was Svetla Todorova – director of DT “Geo Milev” – Stara Zagora. Stara Zagora’s deputy mayors Ivanka Sotirova and Milena Zheleva, municipal councilors, regional governor Ivan Cholakov, deputy commander of the Second Tundzhan Brigade, Colonel Simeon Simeonov, representatives of political and civil organizations, grateful citizens of Stara Zagora also took part in the celebration.

September 6, 2022 marks the 137th anniversary of the Unification of the Principality of Bulgaria with Eastern Rumelia. After the Berlin Congress of 1878, Bulgaria was divided into the Principality of Bulgaria and Eastern Rumelia (within the Ottoman Empire). The Bulgarian population, which remained under Ottoman rule, sought to unite with the liberated Bulgarians.
In 1880, the Bulgarian Secret Central Revolutionary Committee (BTRCC) was established, which undertook the task of bringing about the unification of the Principality with Eastern Rumelia. In order to coordinate the work with the local population, “Union” committees are established.
On September 6, 1885, the detachments of Chardafon the Great (Prodan Tishkov) and Major Danail Nikolaev entered Plovdiv. The regional governor of Eastern Rumelia, Gavril Krastevich, was arrested. A provisional government headed by Dr. Georgi Stranski was established, which announced the accession of Eastern Rumelia to the Principality of Bulgaria. Two days later, Prince Alexander Battenberg confirmed the annexation of the district with a special manifesto.
The day was declared an official holiday of the country by a decision of the National Assembly of February 18, 1998.
