3300 first-timers in Plovdiv, pilot training begins with…

About 3,300 first-year students enter the classrooms in Plovdiv today for the first time. This is about 100 more children compared to last fall, according to the data of the municipal Department of Education. 3,230 first-graders are enrolled in municipal schools, there are also private and state ones.

During this academic year, hundreds of Ukrainians, whose families settled in Plovdiv, fleeing the war in their homeland, will study under the hills. 115 children from Ukraine are enrolled in kindergartens and 230 in schools. Two or three students continue to come every day, said the head of the municipal “Education” department, Donka Shtilyanova. The problem is how they will learn the material, given that they do not speak Bulgarian. Because of this, years ago, a Plovdiv school requested a zero year for foreigners to study intensively only Bulgarian. However, this is not regulated by law at the moment.

During this school year in Plovdiv, the first Montessori group was launched in a kindergarten in the “Eastern” district – in the “Natalia” school. Thus, there are already 9 educational institutions in which the methodology is applied in preschool age plus two crèches. There are also 4 schools where education is Montessori in elementary grades.

Starting today, 4 pilot schools will implement project-based learning using 70 developed lessons. As “Maritsa” wrote, they were provided by the world giant “Intel” under the “Skills for Innovation” program. The know-how in our country is already ready to be applied by OU “Exarch Antim I”, SU “Chernorizets Hrabar”, SU “St. St. Cyril and Methodius” and PG in food technology and technique.

In 10 pilot schools, project-based learning will be advocated in extracurricular activities under the “Design Champions” project. The approach there will rely on the so-called design thinking, in which a given problem is worked on, information is collected, systematized and solutions are sought. The method, trialled by the University of Stranford, meets the world’s gold standard for project-based learning. It will be implemented in the initial stage and consists of assigning missions to the children. It is being introduced by “Dragan Manchov” Elementary School, “Dimitar Dimov” Elementary School, “St. SU “Konstantin-Kyril Filosof”, SU “Dimitar Matevski”, OU “Vasil Petleshkov. A total of 61 classes will be covered.

In addition to the little design champions, their teachers are also challenged. There will be “Climate Fever” workshops for them. They will focus on ecology, group work, global issues. The educational program is implemented by “Wind of Change” AD, represented by BG tennis player Magdalena Maleeva.

According to the Ministry of Education, over 57,000 first-graders are expected to start school today across the country. Nearly 717,000 are all students who will study in the new 2022/2023 school year.

A total of 46 educational institutions from 14 regions will open the school year in other buildings, the most common reason for this being ongoing renovations. Among them are 18 schools from 9 regions of the country.

All students and teachers are provided with conditions for conducting a normal educational process.

The school year will start everywhere. Measures have been taken to protect the health of children and students.
