Machine washing of the restraint systems on the Trakia highway has begun, in the section from the 55th to the 90th km, in the Pazardzhik region, API reported. In the following days, the guardrails in the middle dividing strip in the lane to Burgas will be washed. It is necessary for drivers to drive with caution and appropriate speed, strictly following traffic signals, the traffic agency said in a statement.
To wash the guardrails and the light reflectors mounted on them, a specialized cleaning technique is used, which moves at a speed of 10-15 km/h. When carrying out the activities, the equipment is secured by a device that serves as a buffer in the event of an accident with a moving motor vehicle. In this way, greater safety is ensured for both road workers and other road users.
The reflectors of the restraint systems, the so-called cat’s eyes, are important for traffic safety, because when driving at night and in reduced visibility, they guide drivers and outline the gauge of the road. With surface contamination and lack of maintenance, they lose their reflective ability. For their longer operation, it is important that they retain their main characteristics – chromaticity coordinates, brightness coefficient, as well as retroreflection coefficient for as long as possible. With their regular cleaning, the service life of both the restriction systems and the light reflectors is extended.
