Desi Anderson was born in Bulgaria. Abandoned by her parents. Now, at age 35, is the Republican candidate for state senate from the 46th district in central Illinois.

Her story is unique. She came to the United States at just 8 years old from an orphanage in Caspichan. Desi grew up in the state of Oregon, where she was an excellent student and later graduated from Indiana University. This was followed by an internship in the US Congress, where he worked for representatives from the state of Illinois.

“Honestly, my years in the orphanage were not easy. They didn’t let me go to school because I was Roma,” Anderson says in an interview with BG-Voice, adding, “When I came to the States, if you want to believe it, my favorite thing was to go to school”.

In his early career, he worked for several UN NGOs with missions in Sudan, Uganda and Guatemala. This is also the time when he visits Bulgaria for the first time.

“It’s great that Bulgarians who live here in Peoria contacted me after seeing my application,” says Dessie Anderson.

“I believe that I am still part of the Bulgarian culture and identity, especially when it comes to hard work,” says the state senate candidate.

As the “only reason” to run, she states: “I’m tired of the Democrats’ policy towards small and medium-sized businesses.”

According to her, with their minority in the local congress, the Republicans could not work for the interests of small and medium-sized businesses, which forced many of their owners to leave the state.

“I have always been a Republican. I believe that the Republican Party shares the ideals of the small entrepreneur. We are pro-capitalist and there is nothing wrong with that. As you know, Bulgaria has a long history associated with communism, and people immigrate here to have more – a good life. They invest their hard-earned money,” says Desi Anderson.
