The singer Taylor Swift, who led the nominations for the honors, is the big winner of the defunct MTV European Music Awards, the “Billboard” website reported.
On October 19 – just over two weeks before its scheduled date in Paris – organizers announced that this year’s music awards show would not take place. As the reason for their decision, they cited the “volatility of world events”.
On Sunday, November 5, when the awards were to be handed out, MTV released a list of the winners. Taylor Swift is in the lead with three honors – Best Artist, Best Live Artist and Best Video for “Anti-Hero”.
Surprisingly, the award for best American artist slipped away to Swift. The award went to the rapper Nicki Minajwhich also won Best Hip-Hop.
They also won two trophies Jungkook of South Korean K-pop group BTS and Italian rockers Moneskin.
Jungkook won best K-pop and best song for “Seven”, a collaboration with Lato, while “Moneskin” triumphed with the awards for best rock and best Italian artist.
Nigerian rapper Rema was honored in the newly established Best Afrobeats category.
DJ David Guettawho was born in Paris, where this year’s show was to take place, won the award for best electronic music.
MTV says the winning artists will receive their awards.
This year’s event was to be broadcast live to more than 150 countries from Paris. The ceremony has not been held in the French capital since 1995. Last year, the awards were presented in Düsseldorf, Germany.
This is the first time the European Music Awards have been canceled since they were established in 1994. Even during the pandemic, the show went ahead as planned.
On October 19, MTV released a statement stating that due to the “volatility of world events” and as a precaution, this year’s edition of the show would not take place.
“The European Music Awards are an annual celebration of world music. As we watch events continue to unfold in Israel and the Gaza Strip, this is not a moment for global celebration. With thousands of people already losing their lives, this is a moment for mourning . Voting continues and the winning artists will receive their awards. We look forward to hosting the awards again in November 2024,” the statement added.
Among the other excellent students, they lined up Carole G & Shakira (Best “TQG” Collaboration), Peso Pluma (Best New Artist), Billie Eilish (Best Pop), Anita (Best Latin), Chris Brown (best rhythm and blues).
