The paraglider who crashed Sunday afternoon at the Mt Musala weather station has died.
The incident happened around 1:00 p.m., when the Mountain Rescue Service was notified about the injured man. Ten rescuers from Borovets are going to the top. They contact the employee at the weather station.
“He saw that the man had crashed into the weather station. He broke the glass and almost got inside. There was a doctor on site. They immediately responded for first aid. The blow was heavy,” explained Angel Kerkelev from the Rescue Service in Borovets, quoted by Nova TV.
However, before the rescuers reached the top, permission was obtained from the Ministry of Defense for the use of a Cougar helicopter, which takes off from the base in Krumovo.
The injured man was given emergency aid by a traumatologist who happened to be there. Two leg fractures and a suspected broken pelvis were reported.
Around 4:30 p.m., the man was received by a specialized medical team at the Plovdiv Hospital “St. George”. Unfortunately, however, the injuries turned out to be very serious and the doctors were unable to fight for his life.
The man is one of the best paragliders in Bulgaria and has won several competitions. He most likely took off together with a group of paragliders from Markujik, the national radio reported.
This is not the first rescue operation in Rila this year. A few days ago, mountain rescuers helped an injured tourist, and the action lasted over nine hours.
In the last two weeks of last year, 14 rescue operations were carried out to provide assistance to 16 victims. More than 100 mountain rescuers participated in the actions, and among the main reasons for the accidents are the underestimation of the conditions in the mountains, the overestimation of one’s own capabilities, the lack of mountaineering culture and inappropriate equipment, the Mountain Rescue Service points out.
