The White House administration make nominations for the change of its representatives in several countries and international institutions. Among them is Bulgaria, according to a publication by the US presidential administration.
Joe Biden proposes Kenneth Merton to replace Hero Mustafa, who has headed the US mission in Bulgaria since 2019. Mustafa was appointed by President Donald Trump and came to Bulgaria after being his country’s deputy ambassador to Portugal.
The change must be approved by the Senate.
Merton is a career diplomat and his biography, published on the State Department’s website, includes two ambassadorial posts – in Haiti from 2009 to 2012 and in Croatia from 2012 to August 2015. He was also Deputy Secretary of State to US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, and before that to Condoleezza Rice.
Kenneth Merton has held various positions in Europe, including at the US Embassy in Paris and the US Mission in Brussels, the State Department added. He worked at the US Embassy in Bonn during the reunification of Germany in 1989.
From October 2021 until now, Kenneth Merton has been acting as Chargé d’Affaires at the US Embassy in Haiti.
