He was placed under house arrest, caring for his sick brother

A 32-year-old man from Plovdiv will answer to the British judicial authorities on charges that he drained the large 38.5 million pounds from the social system of the United Kingdom.
He has been remanded in custody by the Leeds Magistrates’ Court, and today the Plovdiv district magistrates placed him under house arrest because he had to take care of his sick brother.

Gunesh Ali is under investigation for four crimes in Britain, one of which is a “conspiracy to claim false representation for profit”. He will also be responsible for “possession of objects to be used for fraud”, as well as for “items acquired through criminal activity” and “money laundering”. These acts are punishable by 5 to 14 years in prison.

According to the prosecutor Galin Gavrailov, according to the people of Plovdiv, the Plovdiv resident has drained the large sum of over 38 million pounds.

The accused himself explained that he had been in the UK for 12 years, initially working in construction. He was 20 years old when he left. Then you set up an office on a main street in London and helped our expatriates to arrange their paperwork with the UK’s social services.

“We have never committed fraud. People came with their ID cards and documents. Among them were lawyers, teachers and doctors and they will stand behind me,” said the 32-year-old from Plovdiv.

He did not know that the British authorities were looking for him. He explained that he had returned legally to Bulgaria and registered a company, rented a restaurant. But his brother fell ill and had to help him.

The court ruled that the sheer severity of the penalties provided could justify an initial risk of absconding. But he also took into account the fact that Gunesh is taking care of his brother, whose health condition is serious.

The imposed measure of remand in house arrest should be controlled by the structures of the Ministry of Interior.

The ruling is not final and is subject to protest and appeal before the Court of Appeal on June 30 at 10 am.
