One of the most famous football coaches in our country – Ferrario Spasov, died last night in an accident. The 61-year-old specialist, who this season leads “Danube” (Lom) was involved in a serious road accident near the Veliko Tarnovo village of Sheremetya and died on the spot. A white sports car hit at high speed from behind the car driven by Spasov, who was returning from a match of his team in the III league against “Lokomotiv” (GO), which ended 1:3.
Later, it became clear that a 24-year-old man from Lyaskovets, known to the police but not convicted, was the driver who swept Ferrari Spasov’s car, “24 Chasa” reported. The driver has 16 months of experience and has driven a powerful German car with a probability of up to 150 km/h. For unknown reasons, he failed to stop, hit Spasov’s golf cart from behind and threw it to the sides of the road. The young driver of the other car and his 28-year-old female passenger were taken to the emergency room with minor injuries. It was found that they only had lacerations, the driver had a hematoma on the head. They were released for home treatment, after which the driver was detained for 24 hours under the law on the Ministry of Internal Affairs. He was tested for alcohol and drugs – the samples were negative. Blood samples were also taken for chemical analysis.
Born in Dupnitsa, Spasov was a football player for “Osm” as well as “Spartak” (PL) – in the period 1979-1994. He became known as a coach. His career began in 1994 in “Olympic” (Galata), and two years later, Ferro, as he was called in football circles, took over the then second division “Litex” and placed the team in the A group. In 1999, he led the hunting team to the title, and in 2001 to the Bulgarian Cup.
Spasov – one of the prominent fans of hard rock and heavy metal music, was also at the head of CSKA in 2004, and in addition he was the coach of many other Bulgarian teams, among them “Botev” (South), “Montana”, “Dunav” ” (Rousse), “Ether”.
The tragedy with Ferrari Spasov is the second in Bulgarian sports in just one day.
Earlier yesterday on the Pleven-Lovech road Stefka Velikova – president and coach of volleyball “Olympic” (Pleven), as well as two players from the men’s team of the club died in an accident – Kaloyan Minkov and Simeon Simeonov. The cause of the accident was the wet pavement, which led to a collision between two cars. The three traveled to Lovech, where “Olimpiets” was supposed to play with the local “Osm” from the “A” group championship.
Stefka Velikova is a former volleyball player, then a coach and a big supporter of social causes in Pleven. She is the wife of one of Pleven’s basketball legends – Darin Velikov, and the mother of national basketball player Asen Velikov. She was the person who a year ago revived the Pleven men’s volleyball team after a 40-year hiatus, being among the founders of “Olympiec”.
Because of the tragedy, the volleyball federation announced three days of mourning and all official matches on the domestic calendar will begin with a minute’s silence.
“We will remember Stefka Velikova as a devoted colleague and friend of the federation, a great supporter of Bulgarian volleyball, a person who with her enthusiasm, professionalism and kindness ignited the spark of her favorite sport among many young people, one of the main engines for the development of volleyball in Pleven in recent years! The loss for all of us is huge!”, wrote the BFW.
