The victory came after a dramatic game by Gergana Peycheva in the final round

The Bulgarian national women’s chess team won the gold medals at the European Championship, which is being held in Budva, Montenegro.

The Bulgarian women won over Georgia in the last round with 2.5 to 1.5 points. Our run ended with 16 match points after 7 wins, 2 draws and no losses.

Today’s match started with a draw between Nurgyul Salimova and Nino Batsiashvili. A victory followed with the white pieces of Antoineta Stefanova against Kotenashvili, but the Georgians equalized after a victory of Salome Melia over Beloslava Krasteva. In the last match, Gergana Peycheva won and brought the much-desired success to our country.

Hungry for success and full of energy: the Bulgarian women captured the attention of the European Chess Championship

“It was a very nervous game, but Gergana is a great fighter and today he proved it again”, commented the national team coach Petar Arnaudov on the victory. “The last few minutes were really tough because I won my game hours ago, but then it was tied. The last party was Gerry’s. Things weren’t looking too good, but we believe in her, crossed our fingers for her and she made it! I think this is the first time in 20 years that chess is so popular in Bulgaria. I am very happy that the response in the media is so positive”, said Antoineta Stefanova.
