President Joe Biden signed a hotly contested bill into law on Wednesday, which provides billions of dollars of new American aid to Ukraine about her war with Russia, marking a rare bipartisan victory for the president, reports Reuters.

“It gives vital support to America’s partnersso they can protect themselves from threats to their sovereignty,” Biden said.

Biden also signed a separate bill related to legislation that bans TikTok in the United States if its owner, Chinese tech firm ByteDance, fails to sell the popular short video app in the next nine months to a year.

The social media platform is especially popular among left-leaning young Americansa group crucial to Biden’s victory in November.

Biden, a Democrat expected to face former Republican President Donald Trump in the November election, pressured lawmakers for six monthsand to approve more funding for Ukraine, which has been battling a full-scale Russian invasion for more than two years. Trump has objected to aid to Ukraine, and some Republicans in Congress have refused to support it.

That ended when the Republican-controlled House of Representatives suddenly changed course and approved four billswhich include funding for Ukraine, Israel, Taiwan and other US partners in the Indo-Pacific region on Saturday.
