The organizers decided that there would be no restart, and everyone finished that way.

Sainz and Perez touched on the exit during the second lap of the first chicane in their battle for 15th position, which was won by the Ferrari driver. Verstappen began to press Russell in the battle for second, with the pair 1.5 behind Leclerc. A full 4.0 behind the world champion was last year’s winner in Italy, Ricciardo, who led a train of 17 pilots behind him.

In the 12th, Vettel dropped out due to a problem with his engine. The German stopped his car shortly after the exit from “Lesmo 2”. Shortly before the race control neutralized the race, Sainz passed Gasly at the first chicane. Leclerc took advantage of the slow track pace and pitted to put on the medium tires after starting on the softs. While the Monegasque was in the pits, the race was restarted, but he returned to the track ahead of Ricciardo and Sainz.

Leclerc lost his pace advantage to Verstappen, melting just 0.2-0.3 seconds per lap from his deficit to the world champion, which was 14.1 seconds. At the same time, Russell, who was less than 4.0 ahead of the Ferrari driver, stopped in the pits and put on the hard tires to finish with.

Sainz overtook Perez in the battle for sixth at the stop for the second chicane. Seconds later, his team-mate Leclerc pitted for the second time, switching back to the softs. After his pit stop, the Monegasque returned to the track in second place, 2.1 ahead of Russell, but also a full 19.5 behind Verstappen.

Ricciardo stopped his McLaren between Lesmo 1 and Lesmo 2 due to a Mercedes engine problem. The safety car then continued to move the cars around the track to finish the race with it, and eventually Max triumphed in Italy.
