Putin, with great support for China, gave a lecture on Xi Jinping

Russian President Vladimir Putin has told Chinese leader Xi Jinping that Moscow supports Beijing’s “One China” policy, opposes US “provocations” in the Taiwan Strait and appreciates China’s “balanced position” on Ukraine, Reuters reported. , quoted by news.bg.

Attempts to create a unipolar world “are absolutely unacceptable for the vast majority of countries on the planet,” the Russian president said. Xi Jinping, for his part, expressed his readiness, together with Moscow, to “play a leading role” in leading the world to a “trajectory of sustainable and positive development”, reports TASS.

“Attempts to create a unipolar world have recently taken on a completely ugly form and are absolutely unacceptable for the vast majority of countries on the planet,” Putin said.

In turn, Xi has warned that the world is facing “colossal changes unprecedented in history.” According to him, China and Russia are ready “to set an example of a responsible world power and play a leading role in bringing such a rapidly changing world to the path of sustainable and positive development.”

The two leaders met on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization Summit Forum in Uzbekistan. It was their first face-to-face meeting since Russia launched its “special military operation” in Ukraine in February. However, the two leaders met immediately before that during the Winter Olympics in Beijing.

In a televised speech before the bilateral meeting, Putin told Xi: “We highly value the balanced position of our Chinese friends when it comes to the crisis in Ukraine. We understand your questions and concerns about this. During today’s meeting, of course we , we will explain our position.”

Putin reaffirmed Beijing’s key positions in the brief public statement, uniting the two countries in what analysts see as a nascent anti-American and anti-Western alliance.

The Russian leader backed Beijing’s insistence that other countries not recognize Taiwan, a self-governing island that Beijing claims is part of China, as an independent country. “We intend to firmly adhere to the One China principle,” Putin said.

He added that Russia “condemns the provocations by the United States and its satellites in the Taiwan Strait,” possibly referring to the August 27 passage of US Navy warships through international waters in the Taiwan Strait.

As a reminder, the United States does not have formal diplomatic relations with Taiwan, but is obligated by law to provide the island with the means to defend itself. China has never ruled out using force to bring Taiwan under its control.

Recently, several groups of US congressmen have visited the self-governing island, including one led by US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who became the highest-ranking US politician to visit Taipei.
