API points out that from 2016 to the middle of 2021, 246 road accidents occurred on this route
Unscrupulous citizens have cut 11 of the restriction pegs placed on the road through the Kresna gorge, the API reported.
“With this act of vandalism, prerequisites are created for unregulated overtaking in the section registered by the Ministry of the Interior as a section with a concentration of road traffic accidents. The place coincides with the section where an NSO car was filmed undertaking dangerous maneuvers, overtaking cars in the gorge,” they state The agency.
The API points out that from 2016 to the middle of 2021, 246 traffic accidents occurred on this route, and since the introduction of the ban on overtaking with the installation of the restriction pegs, not a single accident has been registered.
According to data from the “Road Police”, about 70% of accidents in recent years are due to improper overtaking and inappropriate speed, the traffic agency adds.
“The damaged restriction pegs on the road through the Kresna gorge will be restored and budget funds will have to be spent again instead of being invested in new markings, road signs, guardrails and safety measures,” the API also points out.
The Road Infrastructure Agency calls on travelers on the republican road network to immediately inform the authorities of the Ministry of Internal Affairs if they notice unscrupulous citizens committing acts of vandalism or theft of road accessories.
In order to increase traffic safety in the 16-kilometer section of the I-1 road through the Kresnen Gorge /from the 380th to the 396th km/ and to implement eco-measures to mitigate the impact of traffic on wild animals and birds, API is working on a project for securing the section. Some of them include limiting overtaking, due to insufficient visibility, and speed up to 50 km/h. If safety measures are observed, the passage through the section takes up to 20 minutes.
More than 11,000 cars a day cross the I-1 road through the Kresnen gorge, and it is one of the busiest sections in the country.
