Sergey Surovikin became famous with this nickname during his service in Syria

The Russian Ministry of Defense announced the appointment of a new head of all Russian military forces in Ukraine. This is General Sergey Surovikin, who already received the nickname Armageddon during his service in Syria.

The 55-year-old Surovikin was until now the commander-in-chief of the Russian Aerospace Forces. Social networks recalled that during the coup (attempted coup) in August 1991, the motorized rifle battalion under his command killed in Moscow the three defenders of the White House (the building of the government of the Russian Federation) Dmitry Komar, Ilya Krichevsky and Vladimir Usov, who participate in the resistance against the so-called State Emergency Committee, created by the conspirators against President Boris Yeltsin.

In addition to suppressing the coup in 1991, Surovikin participated in the Second Chechen War and in the so-called military operation in Syria, where it received its fearsome nickname Armageddon. In June, it became known that General Surovikin commanded the Southern Group of Russian troops during the aggression in Ukraine. He now heads all Russian forces there.

Surovikin’s appointment fuels claims in a Washington Post article that there is a growing split in Vladimir Putin’s inner circle over Ukraine. In the material, based on information from American intelligence, it is claimed that a person from the inner circle of the Russian president openly criticized him because of the war in Ukraine and its development. A popular Russian military channel in “Telegram” has already come out with material that there are two factions in the Kremlin and the one that can be called extremist (with a desire to bring the war in Ukraine to a victorious end regardless of the cost) is led by the Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov and the creator of the Private Military Corporation “Wagner” Yevgeny Prigozhin.

Surovikin is the second senior Russian military officer with combat experience in Syria to be appointed commander-in-chief of troops in Ukraine. In April, General Alexander Dvornikov took command:
