Victoria Azarenka has backed Novak Djokovic, who has been accused of faking an injury to disrupt his rivals’ rhythm.

The former No. 1 was in a similar situation herself the last time she reached the semi-finals in Australia – at the time there was speculation that her medical suspension against Sloane Stephens was not justified.

“I’ve been accused of cheating, of faking it, of trying to make my opponents look worse – all things that if someone actually knew me, they would say are so wrong and out of character,” said the contestant from Belarus.

“We’re just regular people going through many, many things,” she continued.

“Sometimes there’s some extreme need to create villains and heroes. We are not villains, we are not heroes either,” said the former #1.

“I am no longer interested in these comments. I am more and more confident in how well I know myself as a person and am not influenced by them. The comments, the ratings – they’re there and I notice them, but I don’t care about them.”

The Serbian himself also defended himself, noting that the attitude towards his injuries has always been different, but he does not feel obliged to give an explanation for his condition.
