A Boca Juniors supporter was unable to swallow their 2-1 loss to Fluminense in the Copa Libertadores final and took his own life. The news of Marcelo Morales’ suicide shook the football world just two days after the Maracana defeat.
The 23-year-old Argentine was a police officer and a keen Boca fan, and the sad news was confirmed by his mother to Cronica TV. He announced his intention even before the game in the event of a loss, but no one took his words seriously enough. Tragically, Marcelo was found dead in his bed the morning after the final match. His mother revealed that everyone thought he was joking after he told his father that “if Boca didn’t win on November 4, he would kill himself”.
The club has not yet come out with any comment on the subject. Boca Juniors last won the Copa Libertadores in 2007.
