For the second time in its independent history and the first time in 23 years, Slovenia will be part of the European Football Championship.
This happened after a historic 2:1 victory for the country over Kazakhstan in the last match of the qualifying group “H”.
Ahead of the group, Slovenia held a one-point lead over their direct rivals for second place in the group, and defeat would have meant a shock qualification for Kazakhstan at Euro 2024.
However, Slovenia got the job done, but not without a shaky 40 minutes in the second half as the score was level.
The hosts managed to open at the end of the first half, when Benyamin Sheshko scored from the penalty spot, but already at the beginning of the second half, Kazakhstan equalized through Ramazan Orazov.
The draw saw Slovenia qualify, but Kazakhstan went all out in search of their historic first major forum qualification, which came within striking distance.
Still, there was no sensation in Ljubljana, because five minutes before the end, when Kazakhstan was already desperately attacking, Benjamin Verbić managed to score for 2:1, and this meant that Slovenia was going to the first European since 2000.
In this group, the leader is Denmark, who today lost 0:2 to Northern Ireland in a match without significance for both teams.
In the other group game, San Marino lost 1:2 to Finland.
