11 years ago, Grigor Dimitrov achieved one of the most significant victories of his career, knocking out world No. 1 Novak Djokovic. Still just building his career, the Bulgarian had to meet the best player of all time at the Masters in Madrid on red courts.

Grisho produced one of the strongest matches of his career to win 7:6, 6:7, 6:3, and then the behavior of Djokovic, who was furious with the fans, was also remembered. During one of the breaks, they used a Serbian curse because they were supporting the Bulgarian tennis player.

Now, days before the start of the Madrid Masters 11 years later, Grigor was asked about that match and shared his memories, which included staying in a “dubious hotel”.

Here is a selection from the words of the Bulgarian star:

“It was quite a few years ago, and I remember being in a somewhat dodgy hotel.

I had to play Djokovic and I was like “okay, I have to earn some money and change hotels”.

It was a very good experience. It was full of people and I was in very good shape and very pumped.

The match was incredible,” Grisho recalled in the interview.

And adds:

“The feeling of the successes I have been achieving recently is wonderful. I enjoy being able to win against extremely good players.”
