Japanese ski jumper Ryoyu Kobayashi made a fantastic attempt of 291 meters, but his achievement will not be recognized as an official world record.

The current Olympic champion, who is also a two-time world champion as well as the current winner of the legendary “Four Chances” tournament, accomplished his record jump on a specially built chance in Iceland.

However, the International Ski Federation (FIS) will not enter this 291 meters in the records for the simple reason that it is not an official competition that is organized and conducted according to their rules. Thus, #1 in the ranking remains Stefan Kraft.

The Austrian recorded a successful attempt of 253.5 meters in Vikersund in 2017 during a ski flight competition.

The FIS also added that in order to claim a record, an attempt must take place on a chance that is approved according to the federation’s rules, and the skis and overall equipment of the jumpers are also relevant.

In Iceland, Kobayashi flew from a makeshift chute built entirely of snow and ice.

The best achievement of the Japanese star is 252 meters – in 2019 in the Slovenian resort of Planica. Kobayashi is one of only six jumpers in history to attempt an attempt of 250 meters or more. The others are Kraft (three times), Robert Johansson of Norway (twice), Peter Prevts (Slovenia), Kamil Stoch (Poland) and Anders Fanemel (Norway).
