Barcelona president Joan Laporta announced at a special press conference that Xavi remains in charge of the team.

Xavi explained why he changed his mind

“I am pleased to inform you that Xavi continues as coach of Barcelona. You know that in the middle of the season he announced that he would leave, but today we are here with the good news that he is staying. We have a team that is made up of young players and more experienced ones. We need stability, and Xavi provides it. I am happy because we wanted him to continue working here.”

“The ambition he has is to keep winning, being more competitive now. Some changes will be made to improve. Since we saw each other yesterday, we were aware that the news is good. When we analyze things, our coach always thinks what is the best for Barca. The great news is that Xavi is continuing. The board of directors unanimously supported this decision,” he added.

“The board members have always been well led by Rafa Juste, who was adamant that we should continue with Xavi. Today is good news because we maintain the stability of a project that we believe will be even more profitable. Last year we won the Super Cup and the League, which came at a difficult time. This year we did not achieve the goals we wanted. We are convinced that this is the best decision for the club and for the institution,” said the boss of the Catalans.

At the end of his speech, Laporta paid tribute to former Barcelona coach Tito Vilanova, who died 10 years ago today, and then gave the floor to Xavi before answering a few questions.

“We are working to try to achieve the 1:1 rule so we can bring in players. La Liga congratulated us the other day for the efforts we are making to reduce wage costs. They will decide what the reinforcements can be,” Laporta shared about the club’s financial situation.

“At the moment there is no approval from La Liga. We are on the right track. There are three main axes: the economic recovery of the club, Espay Barça, which is already taking shape and by December we can return home, and the first – the football team. There is a series of operations with Barça Vision or with the sports equipment. La Liga’s calculations are that this season or next, we will deal with “fair play”. Today, we are still in the process of economic recovery.”

“Nothing was voted on by the board of directors. After the Santiago Bernabeu game, the immediate reaction was total outrage at the attitude of the referee. We have already requested the images from the Federation because we thought Lamin’s was a goal. We will move on to the final consequences, no can cause such abuses. It took us two days to prepare and then I was waiting for the meeting with Xavi. It was clear that Xavi wanted to go ahead with the project, the team boss called everyone. I am always wanted Xavi to continue .. We didn’t want to comment on it too much because I needed to talk to Xavi,” revealed the Barca boss.

“The loss has consequences and there will be changes. Although we have not achieved the goals, there are positive things. There are young players who have broken into the first team. I will not give pleasure to those who want to take everything away from us,” Laporta added.

“I have a great affinity for Xavi as a coach. I told him we’re not going to do anything until the end of the season, that we’re not going to look for a coach, waiting to see how it ends. We have gone through complicated situations, we have not entered into negotiations with any coach,” admitted the president of Barca.

“Let me not go into details, we are in the renegotiation phase. It’s not over yet. I can’t tell you anything. We are working to have the best contract,” Laporta said of Barca’s kit manufacturer talks.
