The municipal councilor from PP-DB-SS in the Metropolitan Municipal Council, Simeon Stavrev, expressed his opinion about the Georgi Asparuhov Stadium and its transformation into a modern stadium on Facebook.

Here is what Simeon Stavrev wrote:

Georgi Asparuhov is one step closer to becoming a modern stadium. Today, in the Metropolitan Municipal Council, we made a unanimous decision that the Metropolitan Municipality will try to acquire the stadium and the smaller training fields around it (marked in blue) from the state. If the state agrees, Sofia will be able to grant the right to build on the municipal property of PFC “Levski” under clear and transparent conditions for the completion of a modern stadium. The lack of a strategy for the development of “Georgi Asparuhov” limited and blocked the modernization to a new sector without a visor. Entirely new “B”, “C” and “D” sectors must also be built.

At the same time, the municipality has a direct interest in developing the city with an adequate sports infrastructure. We need modern stadiums like there are all over Europe. In Sofia, the capital of a European Union country, there is not a single stadium that meets UEFA’s “Category 4” standards. The municipality is actually already involved in the development of the area around Gerena, because a metro station of the third metro diameter (in yellow) is currently being built right next to the stadium. The metro will greatly help ease traffic in the area before and after the match.

It is also extremely important not to allow cases like the Plovdiv fair to be repeated, in which the private investor took over the municipal and state property. If the Metropolitan Municipality acquires “Gerena”, any right to build a new stadium and other facilities must be through a lease, building right or other legal option, with which both “Levski” will have a new modern stadium and the facilities remain municipal after the expiration of a 30-year lease or concession.
